City of Gem Lake: Schools & District 624

The city of Gem Lake, Minnesota belongs to the White Bear Area Schools District (ISD 624). A large district serving all or parts of Birchwood, Gem Lake, Hugo, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake, and White Bear Township, the White Bear Area Schools District includes four Early Childhood program locations (birth-K), nine elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), a two-campus high school (9-12), an Area Learning Center and a Transition Education Center. The district serves just under 9,000 students between all of its schools. Residents of Gem Lake attend the following schools:

Willow Lane Elementary serves Gem Lake’s K-5 students. Known for being a blue ribbon school, one of only seven schools in the state to receive this award, Willow Lane Elementary is a comprehensive and well-rounded program designed to “Develop Respectful Citizen Scholars”. Students within the school participate in a wide variety of activities throughout their time at the school. Highlights include a University of Minnesota Physics Circus for 3rd graders, the Junior Achievement BizTown for 4th grade students, and an on-the-job training day at Donatelli’s restaurant for 5th graders. At this particular event, students learn how to write their own resume, interview, and work at a real restaurant. In addition to great activities, Willow Lane features programs for struggling or international students, a gifted and talented program, and both literacy as well as art initiatives.

Gem Lake students in grades 6-8 attend Sunrise Park Middle School. The mission of Sunrise Park Middle School is to develop “inquiring lifelong learners with the skills to succeed in the interconnected world of the 21st century”. This is achieved through a rigorous curriculum as well as an intentional environment that encourages students through support of their academic, social, and emotional needs. With around 800 students, Sunrise Park Middle School has a wide variety of programs for students to utilize. World language options include Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. Students can get involved with band and choir as well as Project Lead the Way courses. Additionally, Sunrise Park Middle School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, meaning that students have access to world-class programming designed to prepare students for postsecondary education and the real world.

White Bear Lake Area High School serves Gem Lake residents in grades 9-12. The north campus is home to grades 9-10 whereas the south campus serves grades 11-12. The high school has extensive curricular and co-curricular programming, including Advanced Placement (AP) courses, athletics, arts, and more. Current enrollment sits at around 2500 students.
