In the northwest corner of St. Louis Park is the neighborhood of Shelard park. Shelard Park is bordered by the City of Plymouth to the north, I-394 to the south, Highway 169 to the east, and the City of Minnetonka to the west. The 109 acre neighborhood, which is about 3 residential blocks, is around 34 percent commercial and 6 percent parks and open spaces. The area that is now Shelard Park was once a part of Minnetonka. After its annexation to St. Louis Park in 1955, the city’s original plan was to build a shopping center in the space. However, the plans fell through and instead the area became the St. Louis Park’s first planned, mixed-use neighborhood.

Shelard Park is uniquely separated from the rest of the St. Louis Park community with its position in the northwest corner of the city. The neighborhood was slowly constructed from 1971 to 1986 as a combination of rental housing and owner occupancy. The mixed-use neighborhood is encircled by townhomes, apartments, and condominiums, while its outer circle consists of high-rise office buildings, low-rise office buildings, and parking ramps. Shelard Park is home to a total of 1559 residents and has 809 housing units. Of those 809 units, 308 are condominiums and 501 are apartment units.

A small strip mall is located in the north end of the neighborhood with three excellent dining options. For those looking for authentic Mexican food, Pineda Tacos is the perfect destination. The small restaurant serves tasty tacos with fresh ingredients and fast service. Tea House is known for its potstickers, house spicy fish rank, and a weekend buffet Restaurant Baku cooks up an authentic Russian cuisine inside its cozy and friendly establishment. The local favorite on the colorful menu is the fresh kebabs. Willow Creek 12 Theatre is also located in the northwest corner of Shelard Park as an entertainment option.

Shelard Park is home to one neighborhood park, which is Shelard Park. The park is mainly 7 acres of open green space and wetlands for residents to stroll through on various walking trails. However, there are amenities such as a basketball court, picnic tables, playground, and picnic shelter for locals to enjoy.
