The Southdale neighborhood, with almost 2,000 residents, is located within the Southeast quadrant of Edina and is almost entirely encompassed by Southdale Center and the Galleria. The neighborhood is comprised of both luxury homes and shopping spaces. It is bordered on the north by Highway 62, on the east by York Avenue, on the south by 70th Street, and on the west by Valley View Road. The neighborhood derives its name from the famous Southdale Center.
Southdale Center is famous for being the nation’s first enclosed, climate-controlled shopping center. It was established and built by the Dayton Company and designed to be a modern town-center. Originally it had a post office, grocery store and a zoo, in addition to its decently-sized retail stores. The Southdale neighborhood also possesses another shopping complex, the Galleria, constructed in 1976. The Southdale Medical Center, medical office space, and several multi-unit/story residences are found within this neighborhood, as well.
What shocks many people is that the Southdale neighborhood is the third most populous neighborhood in Edina, behind only Parkwood Knolls and Countryside. Most people think of the shopping center That is a result of the luxury condo and apartment buildings north of Southdale Center and both east and west of Fairview Hospital. Most of those buildings were built in the 1960’s. Newer high-end condos were constructed east of the Galleria in 2008. In 2013, construction began on another residential property on the northwest corner of York Avenue and 69th Street West. There is a park and ride service in the northeast corner of Southdale Mall, as well as a new Metro Transit station, making the neighborhood a perfect spot for downtown commuters. The Southdale Neighborhood has access to the Promenade walking and biking trail system as well, which also connects to Centennial Lakes and Promenade. With the plethora of retail and shopping options located close by, Southdale is a wonderful residential neighborhood to call home
