Centered around the Cannon River, Northfield has a wide variety of parkland. The city has reserved over 400 acres of land for its 35 different parks for residents to enjoy recreational activities in the great outdoors. Some of the most notable parks include:

Odd Fellows Park: Located just blocks from Saint Olaf College, Odd Fellows Park is a popular destination throughout the year. With a beautiful backdrop to the woods, the park has 20 acres of land that consists of open grounds and walking trails that are a perfect way to experience the outdoors. In the spring, summer, and fall the park’s pavilion, playground, picnic tables, and grills are in high use.

Riverside Lions Park: Situated right next to Cannon River, Riverside Lions Park has 21 acres of maintained land that is centrally located in Northfield. The park offers shelters, picnic areas, playgrounds, trails, and nature areas. Riverside Lions also has the additional enticement of a riverside setting. During the warmer months of the year, residents enjoy canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and simply strolling by the bank of the river.

Carleton College Cowling Arboretum: Built in 1920’s, Carleton College Cowling Arboretum  consists of approximately 880 acres of land, which is adjacent to the college. Habitats include an upland forest, floodplain forest, prairie, oak savanna, river, marsh, and several ponds.  The arboretum has three purposes: education, conservation, and reservation. Residents primarily enjoy Cowling Arboretum’s recreational opportunities throughout all four seasons, which include skiing, walking, running, fishing and simply being outdoors.

Ames Park and Riverside Commons: In the historical region of downtown Northfield is one of Northfield‘s most popular parks. Ames Park and Riverside Commons is situated right next to Cannon River and is an ideal place for an outdoor stroll. The park offers picnic tables, walking trails, and it even has a footbridge that provides easy access to both sides of the river. Because of its location, residents can also enjoy the restaurants and historical sites that are located nearby.            

Sechler Park: Sechler Park is the largest park in the city of Northfield. With 150 acres of land and extensive access to Cannon River, Sechler Park is the hub for outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, biking, soccer, baseball, and softball. The park is also ideal for picnicking with shelters, tables, grills permanent restrooms, water, and electricity. With easy access to the river, residents love kayaking, canoeing, and fishing in the picturesque scenery.
