The area now known as Spring Lake Park was originally a part of Manomin County. Manomin County was established in May of 1857 and included Columbia Heights, Fridley, Hilltop, and Spring Lake Park. In April of 1870, the people of Manomin County petitioned to become a part of Anoka County and were accepted as a Township.

Spring Lake Park opened for development in 1936 by the Bronson-Erickson real estate agency. The name Spring Lake Park was chosen because the name seemed to represent the area well, and officially became a village in 1953.
