City of Woodland: Brief History

The first settlement in Woodland, Minnesota was established in 1867. Since the time the land was purchased from the Native Americans, Woodland has been occupied for more than a century and a half.

There are two areas make up most of this city’s history, and they are Maplewoods and the Groveland Homeowners Association. Maplewoods started out as a vacationing spot in the summer for tourists. However, as time went on and tourism in the area began to die out, homes were built and the area turned into a gorgeous residential community.

In 1902, a group of Methodist members created the Methodist Lakeside Assembly and built homes near Maplewoods. Later, they turned into the Groveland Homeowners association. In 1948, residents of Maplewoods and the Groveland Homeowners Association joined together and established what is now the City of Woodland. Their goal was to preserve their seperate areas, while enjoying the benefits of being a part of a city. The initial title of the new city was the Village of Maplewoods. In 1949 the name was changed to the Village of Woodland and eventually changed to the City of Woodland. The name got its inspiration from words of both areas, “wood” from Maplewoods and the “land” from Groveland.
