City of New Germany: Community Life

New Germany, Minnesota is a small city located west of Mayer. A city of close to 400 residents, and encompassing an area of only 1 square mile, New Germany has a small-town feel and community.

As one of many smaller cities that dot the landscape west of the Twin Cities metro area, residents of New Germany enjoy a more private community that exists within their city. While the city is not highly developed nor very busy, it offers locals a country lifestyle which is highly desirable to some.

There are several businesses and restaurants located in the city of New Germany. With products and services ranging from agriculture to banking to landscaping and so on, there are several options for residents to enjoy. One of the most popular restaurants in town is the Hollywood Roadhouse. Established in 1940, this local restaurant features a bar with bar foods and a liquor store. However, for those seeking greater variety in regards to dining, shopping, and entertainment, there are several businesses in the surrounding community that are widely praised. One of the most popular community restaurants and gathering areas is the Hollywood Sports Complex in the nearby city of Watertown. The restaurant is a family entertainment center and offers bowling, food, catering for groups of all sizes, liquor, live music on weekends, pool, darts, video games, lighted softball fields and sand volleyball courts and pull tabs with the proceeds going to the Watertown Lions. As a community gathering destination, there is always something to do at the Hollywood Sports Complex. In addition, they are very active in hosting and organizing sporting leagues for the surrounding community and the state as a whole.

New Germany has a long history of baseball, and their amateur team, the New Germany Dutchmen, hold a special place in the community. With many games taking place right within the town limits, residents enjoy watching local games and cheering on community members. The Dutchmen compete against a number of other teams within the surrounding communities.

In regards to community events, New Germany puts on several kids celebrations during the holidays including an Easter egg hunt, a Halloween trick or treat party, and a visit from Santa Claus during Christmas. Additionally, events such as bingo are common occurrences.
