City of Golden Valley: Schools & District 281

Golden Valley, Minnesota is a part of the Robbinsdale Area School District, also known as school district 281. This is an award-winning district committed to academic excellence. They take pride in the services that they have provided to families and students for nearly a century. The district has nine elementary schools, two middle schools, and two high schools. School district 281 also services a Spanish Immersion school that teaches children in a two-way bilingual learning school.

Lakeview Elementary is a school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP).  IBPYP takes an international approach to educating the whole child. Through a challenging and diverse education, students learn problem-solving skills, appreciate different cultures and gain an understanding of their place in this world. IBPYP provides the framework for curriculum in language arts, math, science, social studies, and physical education. It focuses on inquiry-based learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and make connections from learning to their everyday lives.

Robbinsdale Middle School prepares students through several educational opportunities.

The IB curriculum addresses familiar disciplines, such as: math, science, language arts and humanities. What sets the program apart is its distinctive core, the five Areas of Interaction: Approaches to Learning, Community and Service, Health and Social Education, Environments, and Human Ingenuity. Starting in the fall of 2013, Robbinsdale Middle School began offering a STEM Magnet Program with focuses on engineering, science and design technology. Through these key programs, this middle school allows its students to be immersed in many options for learning.

The district has two main high schools. The mission of Cooper High School is to provide a caring and vibrant community where all members are respected. They educate students to become active, compassionate, principled and critical thinkers who understand other people. Students are given the opportunity to reach their highest academic potential while participating in enriching activities, giving them the opportunity to grow both in and out of the classroom.

The mission of Armstrong High School is to inspire and educate all learners to discover their potential and positively contribute to their community. The school’s Advanced Placement (AP) program is one of the largest in the state of Minnesota. They encourage all students to take at least one AP course before they graduate from Armstrong in order to better prepare them for their education options after high school.
