City of Bloomington: A Brief Overview

Home to the internationally renowned Mall of America, the city of Bloomington, Minnesota is the 4th largest city in the state. With a population of close 86,000 residents and a geographic area of 38.42-square miles, Bloomington is one of Minnesota’s busiest cities. The city of Bloomington can be easily divided into two sectors, West and East. The west side is primarily residential in nature whereas the east side is the home of Bloomington’s commerce.

Bloomington has no shortage of business, as it contains the Mall of America, IKEA, Donaldson Company, Wells Fargo, and HealthPartners. The wealth of businesses within the city makes it a major employment center. Easy access to surrounding cities, including Minneapolis and St. Paul, provide countless additional options for employment outside of the Bloomington city limits.

Bloomington is a part of Hennepin County, and its neighboring cities include Richfield, Edina, Eden Prairie, Burnsville, and Eagan. The city of Minneapolis is also nearby at just 10 miles, or 12 minutes, north. The main routes through the city are Interstate 35W to the east and US Highway 169 to the west, both of which connect to Interstate 494. These major highways unite the community with the majority of the metro area.
