Apple Valley, Minnesota, is a city in northwestern Dakota County and a “south of the river” suburb in the Twin Cities. The city got its name from Apple Valley, California, which was where the first home developers in the town had lived. According to the most recent census, the city’s population was nearly 50,000, making it the 18th most populated city in Minnesota. In the year 2013, Money Magazine dubbed Apple Valley the 17th best place to live in the entire nation, as it had been in at least the top 30 for six years running.
