City of Nowthen: Schools & Districts

Within the City of Nowthen, a total of three school districts are present: Anoka-Hennepin School District 11, St. Francis School District 15, and Elk River School District 728. Nowthen residents have an abundance of educational options within close proximity to home. Some of the schools near Nowthen include:

Ramsey Elementary School serves about 1,312 students in grades K-5 in Independent School District 11. At Ramsey Elementary, students have access to more than 25 acres of outdoor space devoted to the school’s Environmental Learning Area (ELA). The land consists of woodlands, wetlands, and tall and short grass prairies. Their ELA is home to trails as well as 13 stations. Students at Ramsey Elementary benefit abundantly from learning about and being in nature.

St. Francis Middle School (SFMS) is home to about 1,280 students in grades 6-8. Each of the 60 dedicated staff members seeks to support every student in achieving their goals. At SFMS, the Accelerated Reader program is used. Accelerated Reader provides computerized comprehensive quizzes for books students read, which helps them better understand what they are reading. More than 145,000 books are available to students as well as reading practice, vocabulary practice, literacy skills, and recorded voice quizzes. Accelerated Reader is one of many programs that provide exceptional academics opportunities to students. St. Francis Middle School also offers many athletics and activities, including wrestling, track and field, strength and conditioning, knowledge bowl, jazz band, and many more.

Many students from Nowthen attend Spectrum High School. Spectrum is a public charter school in Elk River that serves approximately 625 students in grades 6-12. Although Spectrum was established in 2006, the 6th grade building was opened in 2014. The 6th grade emphasizes: rigorous instruction balanced with support, equipping students to succeed with college readiness skills and a commitment to forming relationships and connections. Spectrum High School seeks to: encourage students to attain their maximum potential through a 3-dimensional strategy emphasizing college preparatory curriculum, a technology rich environment, and community based outreach. The motto at Spectrum is “Small School Big Results”. Spectrum High School offers college level classes while staying on campus through College at Spectrum High School (CaSH). The Minnesota Report Card has designated Spectrum High School as a “Reward School” for three consecutive years. Reward Schools represent the highest performing (top 15 percent) of Minnesota’s Title 1 schools. In addition to exceptional academics, students also enjoy extracurricular activities including baseball, softball, tennis, track and field, hockey, golf, alpine skiing, basketball, cross country, soccer, football, volleyball, wrestling, and more.
