The city of Newport, Minnesota is located 9 miles southeast of St. Paul on the Mississippi River in Washington County. Newport is a small residential river community with outstanding people. The city is made up of mostly residential streets with large trees situated on the river bluffs. The city covers a total of 3.88 square miles and is home to 3,461 residents. Situated just a 15-minute drive from both St. Paul and Minneapolis, residents enjoy the small town feel while still having access to all the big city has to offer.

The city of Newport offers several events that residents of all ages enjoy. One of the most unique events held is Booya. On the second Sunday in July, residents get together to make Booya. Booya is a stew like food that is prepared on a very large scale designed to feed thousands of people. Booya is made up of chicken, beef, or pork along with vegetables, and a wide variety of seasoning. Booya takes up to 2 days to prepare and is made in specifically designed booya kettles that can hold 50 gallons of stew. The Booya event also includes several other activities including a parade, bingo, liquor raffle, beer tent, and refreshments.

Newport also offers several outdoor activities available to residents. One of the ways residents can enjoy the outdoors in the city is by going to one of their many parks. Newport’s parks are great places for family get-togethers, graduation parties, and barbeques. Newport’s parks also offer several miles of walking trails where residents enjoy the beautiful scenery along the bluffs of the river.

Newport is a strong close-knit community offering a small town feel with the benefits of a big city. It’s close proximity to Minneapolis and St. Paul allows residents to enjoy all the two cities have to offer.
