Mendota, Minnesota is a small city with just 0.30 square miles of land. Because of this, the city does not maintain any parks within its boundaries. However, residents can find numerous parks in neighboring cities for outdoor recreational activities. Some of the most notable parks include:
Pilot Knob Preservation Site: Situated on the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers, Pilot Knob Preservation is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. The park consists of 25 acres of wooded hills and a spectacular view of Mississippi and Minnesota rivers, Fort Snelling, and downtown Minneapolis. The preservation site has great historical significance and was known to the Dakota as Oheyawahi, or “a hill much visited”. It was here that the tribe buried their dead. Today, the park is a popular destination to observe wildlife, especially birds. Pilot Knob attracts a massive amount of species, some of which are rarely ever seen in the Twin Cities area. The park is also located next to Big River Regional Trail for bicycling and hiking opportunities.
Crosby Farm: Another nearby natural park is Crosby Farms Regional Park. The park was originally a farm before being purchased by the City of St. Paul in the 1960’s. Crosby Farm now consists of 736 acres of land that primarily protects floodplain forests, oak wooded slopes, wetlands, small lakes, and the bank of the Mississippi River. Because of its many diverse ecosystems, the park is home to an abundance of wildlife. The primary recreational activities on Crosby Farm include bicycling, hiking, bird watching, picnicking, fishing, and cross-country skiing.
Fort Snelling State Park: Fort Snelling Park is full of outdoor recreational activities. Visitors can hike on Pike Island, swim in Snelling Lake, canoe on Gun Club Lake, play golf, and enjoy the great outdoors. The park’s main feature is its extensive hiking and cross-country skiing trails that connect with the Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge and Minnehaha Park.
Rogers Lake Park: Located in the neighboring city of Mendota Heights is Rogers Lake Park. Besides water activities such as boating and fishing, Rogers Lake Park has a variety of amenities to offer, including a sand volleyball court, picnic shelter, and playground area. The most unique feature of the park, however, it its skate park. The fenced skate park is tier 1 and is one of the main attractions in the area. Other amenities include a fishing pier, concrete basketball court, and paved walking paths throughout the park.
