City of Marine on St. Croix: Community Life

Marine on St. Croix, Minnesota is a historic city situated 12 miles north of Stillwater and 15 miles south of Taylors Falls. The city was home to the first commercial sawmill along the St. Croix River, and even today locals and visitors can visit the Mill Site. Marine’s approximately 700 residents take pride in their friendly, small town country atmosphere while still located near the Twin Cities.

In order to maintain a close-knit community, Marine on St. Croix offers a variety of events, one of which is the Street Dance. Each year, Marine Fire and Rescue hold the Street Dance. In the downtown area, the community take part in a dance with food and beverages served as well. Musical entertainment is also provided. The Street Dance represents the volunteer spirit and small town atmosphere that Marine seeks to uphold. Another event that brings the community together are the 4th of July festivities. Residents enjoy events including a race, parades, and fireworks. The Art Fair is an annual event that has taken place for more than 40 years. Over 175 artists and crafters display their works, and proceeds benefit the Marine on St. Croix Public Safety Department. Marine is home to a variety of events to bring the community together.

The small community of Marine on St. Croix is home to numerous amenities. One amenity loved by all ages is the Marine Community Library. With a connection to the Washington County library system, this local library has abundant resources. The library was first opened in Marine in 1968, and today has over 2,000 books and access to the greater Washington County library resources.

The Stone House Museum maintains the history of Marine. This house was built in 1872 by Swedish stone mason Gustav Carlson. The Stone House Museum was is an exceptional example of early stone masonry, and the building was once a town hall and jail. Locals take pride in remembering their city’s history through the Stone House Museum.
