City of Mahtomedi: Schools

The community of Mahtomedi realizes the importance of quality education with around 2,000 families residing in the city. Mahtomedi is home to its own school district, which also serves the neighboring cities of Dellwood, Grant, Hugo, Pine Springs, Willernie, and parts of Lake Elmo, Stillwater, Oakdale, and White Bear Lake. The Mahtomedi Public School district’s mission is to provide a learning community in which all students can learn, succeed, and thrive in a global society. The city itself is home to a preschool, two elementary schools, middle school, and high school.

One of the most outstanding elementary schools in the Mahtomedi Public School District is Wildwood Elementary. Wildwood serves around 600 students from grades K-2. Students are served by 37 full-time teachers who are committed to producing quality education at within a safe and welcoming environment. The teacher to student ratio is approximately 16 to 1 in each class. Besides the traditional core curriculum in science, math, language arts, and social studies, Wildwood also offers immersive education in Spanish, music, art, physical education, and media/computer skills. Teachers at Wildwood practice the latest teaching methods including the use of assessment data, SMART Boards, and differentiated instruction.

O.H. Anderson Elementary is another excellent elementary school within the City of Mahtomedi. The school is ranked 30th among all elementary schools in the state, serving almost 700 students in grades 3-5. In the year 2015, O.H. Anderson Elementary students scored a calculated Average Standard Score of 88.06. Students are served by 40 full-time teachers, with an average teacher to student ration of 17 to 1. Perhaps one of the best middle schools in the entire state of Minnesota is Mahtomedi Middle School. Serving students from grades 6-8, Mahtomedi Middle School is ranked among the top 5 of all middle school in Minnesota. In 2015, the school ranked better than 99.2 percent of all other middle schools, with an Average Standard Score of 95.07. Over 800 students are enrolled at Mahtomedi and 41 teachers are employed full-time. The school boasts an outstanding engineering program as well as a gifted learners program. Other activities include band, jazz, student council, newspaper, math counts, and theatre. Athletic opportunities are also available to students with cross-country, gymnastics, volleyball, and track.

Besides the fantastic public schools that are present in Mahtomedi, there are some private schooling options available. St. Jude of the Lake is one of the best private schooling options, with a staff that is committed to developing students intellectually, spiritually, and personally into the person God created them to be. One of the school’s most attractive features is its teacher to student ratio of 10:1, which provides students with individualized attention. St. Jude is an International Baccalaureate World School for Pre-K to 6th grade students.

Mahtomedi is home to one high school, which is one of the best public schools in the state. Mahtomedi Senior High is ranked better than 99.4 percent of high schools in the state. In 2006-2007, the school boasted a 99 percent graduation rate, 3.4 average GPA, and 24.7 average ACT score. Of the 1155 students that attend Mahtomedi High School, 513 students take advanced placement classes and 80 percent pass the AP test. The school also offers outstanding fine arts, engineering, and world language classes. Athletics are an integral part Mahtomedi High School, with spring, summer, fall, and winter sports teams. Sports teams include soccer, football, swim and dive, tennis, basketball, and gymnastics.
