City of Mahtomedi: Parks & Trails

The City of Mahtomedi, Minnesota offers an abundance of recreational activities and different ways to experience the outdoors. The small-town city is spread over just 5.76 square miles of land, 2.27 of which is water. Five different parks are maintained by the city for the enjoyment of the friendly community. Some of the most notable parks include:

Southwest Park: Comprising over 16 acres of land is Southwest Park. Located in south central Mahtomedi, the park is one of the premier locations in the town for sporting activities and events. Southwest Park features 2 baseball/softball fields and two soccer fields that highly used by the community. A large 86 car parking lot is provides for convenient parking for sporting events, and several picnic tables are also spread across the park.

Wildwood Park: Wildwood Park is a spacious park that is located in south central Mahtomedi. With 21 acres of land, the park is a popular destination to enjoy active and leisurely activities. The park contains a softball/baseball field and a volleyball court for residents to enjoy in the summer, as well as playground equipment. The park is primarily known for its gorgeous views of Lost Lake and its scenic trail under a shady canopy of mature trees. Residents also enjoy fishing off of the park’s fishing pier.

Mahtomedi Park: Almost half of Mahtomedi is comprised of water, with several lakes located within the city boundaries. One of the most popular lakes in the area is White Bear Lake, which residents of Mahtomedi have access to through Mahtomedi Beach. The community park is only one acres in size but offers a wide variety of activities to residents, with amenities like a canoe storage rack, picnic tables, benches, outdoor shower spray-off, and permanent restrooms. Perhaps the best amenity, however, is the beach. Mahtomedi Beach offers beautiful panoramic views of the large lake where residents can cool off on hot summer days and enjoy a picnic on the sandy beach.     

Wedgewood Park: Even with 11 acres of land, Wedgewood Park is one of the smallest parks in Mahtomedi. Located in southwestern Mahtomedi, Wedgewood Park is primarily known for its beautiful, multi-use trails that run throughout the entire park land. Recreational activities are also available on the park’s sports court, softball, and baseball fields. Other amenities include picnic tables, benches, a 37 car parking lot, and a multipurpose building.  

Katherine Abbott Park: Comprising approximately 76 acres of land, Katherine Abbott Park is the largest park in the City of Mahtomedi. Despite its location in an urban area, the various different landscapes and terrain that are present in Katherine Abbott make it a unique park. The park’s main feature is its natural setting under tall pines trees and a large pond. Because of this, Katherine Abbott is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Over three miles of hard-surface trails wind around the gorgeous park grounds that are usable for cross-country skiing, bird watching, hiking, and picnicking. The Katherine Abbott Center is also available to visitors with amenities such as heat, toilets, full kitchen, water, and a fireplace. Canoe access to nearby Long Lake is also available.
