The city of Hugo, Minnesota is home to 14,239 residents who make up a welcoming and active community. Hugo is a commuter town, lying 21 miles north of downtown St. Paul on the border of the metro area. In the month of January, kids are invited to Oneka Elementary for the annual Snow Jam event. The event takes place in the school’s gym where kids can play in a bouncy castle, listen to family-friendly music, participate in games, and enjoy refreshments.

During the summer, a similar event is held outdoors in the parks of Hugo. Each week the event is held at a different park within Hugo, where kids ages 6 to 12 are invited to enjoy a bouncy castle and games. The city also has partnerships with organizations in nearby cities, where residents can enjoy more events.

Another large factor that shapes the community life of Hugo are the amenities offered within the city. One of the most used amenities in the city is the library located within the city. The Hugo Library Express provides residents with an abundance of resources including new and best-selling books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, and more. Various children, teen, and adult programs are also available.

Located just south of the city is the Oneka Ridge Golf Course. This privately owned course features rolling fairways, excellent grass range, practice putting and chipping greens, and 18 holes of golf. The golf club offers different leagues and lessons for youth and adults. Residents can also enjoy the nearby White Bear Township 17 Theatre in nearby White Bear Lake, where the latest movies are screened for audiences.

The community of Hugo is also served by many different organizations that focus their time and resources into making the city a better place to live. One of the most influential organizations is the Hugo Lions Cub. The Hugo Lions Club is a part of the worldwide Lions Club International, which is the largest service club in the world. The club has over 1.4 million service members worldwide in 210 different countries. Lions Club members serve the community through hands-on services and humanitarian projects.

Another important organization within the community is the American Legion. The American Legion is a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization.

The last determining factor that shapes the community is its location. As a suburb on the northern fringes of the Twin Cities metro area, the residents of Hugo commute 21 miles to St. Paul.
