City of Forest Lake: Parks & Trails

The city of Forest Lake covers a total area of 35.54 square miles. Forest Lake has a total of 23 parks covering 251 acres developed and maintained by the Forest Lake Parks and Recreation Department. Forest lake features numerous different parks including mini parks, community parks, neighborhood parks, golf courses, and paved trails. Forest Lake offers numerous amenities and opportunities that it’s residents can enjoy through the many different parks in the city.

Hardwood Creek Regional Trail: A paved trail running north-south through Forest Lake. The 9.5-mile trail has a paved portion and a grass portion. The paved portion is for walking, hiking, biking, and in-line skating while the grass  portion is for horseback riding. Hardwood Creek Regional Trail is also level allowing wheelchair access. The trail offers a beautiful scenic view that all residents can enjoy.

Carlos Avery State Wildlife Management Area: A 23,000-acre park that is home to several species of wildlife including deer, turkey, and waterfowl. There are several recreational activities available to the public including hunting and wildlife viewing. There are many different hunting options including deer, bear, pheasant, turkey, and much more. Carlos Avery Wildlife Area provides a sanctuary to the numerous wildlife inside the park. The public enjoys the beauty of the park through bird watching and much more.

Hardwood Creek Wildlife Management Area: A 583 acre park that maintains the natural environment. The park is made up of prairies, forests, wetlands, and uplands. Some of the many activities available in the park are hunting, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Hardwood Creek WMA is part of the largest remaining native habitat in Washington County featuring a 60 acre tamarack bog and a maple-basswood forest.

Forest Hills Golf Club: An 18-hole private golf club available to the residents of Forest Lake.  Forest Hills is a quiet and secluded course that golfers of all levels enjoy. The course offers golfers a scenic tour with 11 lakes and ponds, 3 dozen bunkers, and several different sized greens with prime course conditions. Forest Hills Golf Club also features a driving range, putting green, instructors, restaurant, and social events.
