Elliot Park, located south of downtown Minneapolis in between West and East Downtown, was first established in the 19th century, just four years following the formation of Minneapolis. The local park and neighborhood were both named after the land donor Dr. Joseph Elliot, a man who owned a farm there and gave it away for the making of a park. Many manors were constructed in the neighborhood in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Those homes were converted into apartments to house the vast arrival of new residents. As a highly populated residential area, Elliot Park is home to close to 7,000 people.

The Elliot Park neighborhood is one of the older areas in Minneapolis. It has an exclusive urban atmosphere and much of its original historic structures are still noticeable. Small businesses liven up the community and include relaxing coffee houses and jazzy renovated diners. Being so close to the downtown area makes for an easy commute to work everyday. Apartments blanket the neighborhood, as well as some Rappahannock condominiums. A collection of Victorian residences still exists today in the southeastern segment of the neighborhood and numerous churches remain in the northwestern blocks.

One of the largest employers and contributors to the neighborhood is the Hennepin County Medical Center. The Hennepin County Medical Center partners with their community and their patients to guarantee access to wonderful care for everyone. They strive to continually improve their services through teaching, patient and community education, and research. This medical center is renowned for its specialized care, as it strives to do the best quality restorative work in healing the mind, body, and soul.

Bethlehem Baptist Church is one of the biggest landmarks in the Elliot Park neighborhood. A large place of worship drawing in numerous individuals and families from around the state, Bethlehem Baptist Church is a very active member of the Elliot Park community. North Central University is another landmark. A small, Christian college located adjacent to the neighborhood’s park, North Central University offers a traditional 4-year college program in addition to graduate studies. With around 1,100 students enrolled annually, North Central University plays a major role in the local neighborhood.

The Elliot Park neighborhood is home to two parks. They include:

Elliot Park: Elliot Park shares the name of the neighborhood in which it resides and is located adjacent to Northcentral University in the center of the neighborhood. A park oasis located in the middle of a bustling city, Elliot Park offers visitors a number of amenities. These include a baseball/softball field, basketball court, picnic area with grills, playground, restrooms, skate park, tennis court, and wading pool. At 6.44 acres, Elliot Park offers a swath of green, open space amidst a busy surrounding environment.

Franklin Steele Park: Franklin Steele Park is one of the oldest parks in the city of Minneapolis. Despite its small size of 1.57 acres, the park has plenty to offer for those seeking active recreation. With a ½ basketball court, playground, and splash pad play area, Franklin Steele Park is a very popular destination for children and young families. Additionally, the park offers picnic areas, outdoor grills, and restrooms.
