Calhoun Isles: East Calhoun

East Calhoun is a neighborhood that is a member of the Calhoun-Isles Community and a part of the Uptown area. On the neighborhood’s western border is the popular Lake Calhoun, which is the area’s main attraction. The neighborhood includes shops, restaurants, nightclubs, theaters, shopping areas, and coffee shops. The housing consists of apartment buildings, duplexes, and single-family homes, most of which were built during the turn of the 20th century. Lake Calhoun is one of the most prevalent lakes in Minneapolis. Part of the Chain of Lakes, Lake Calhoun was connected to Lake of the Isles by a canal in 1911. This neighborhood of 2,500 residents offers a small-town atmosphere and a peaceful haven in the midst of big city living.

Part of the way East Calhoun provides community engagement within the neighborhood are through events among the locals. East Calhoun Happy Hour is an evening event in mid-July where locals can meet their neighbors and learn what’s going on in their community. Light appetizers are provided, along with a cash bar.  An annual Labor Day Celebration is another event that takes place in early September. As the communities most popular event, it draws the largest crowds and the neighbors enjoy getting together to play outdoor games, sharing good food, and just having an all-around great time.

There are many local businesses and organizations that residents and visitors of East Calhoun can enjoy. St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church is a historic site located in the East Calhoun neighborhood. With a location overlooking Lake Calhoun, the church is a long-standing staple of the community. Attached to the church is the St. Mary’s Lake Calhoun Event Center. This center is incredibly scenic and perfect for wedding receptions, fundraisers, corporate events, and more.

Another notable location within the neighborhood is Calhoun Bike. A local bike sales and repair shop, Calhoun Bike is ideal for the many bikers that utilize the nearby trails around the lakes. Its convenient location and knowledgeable staff make Calhoun Bike a community favorite. On the west side of the neighborhood, near Lake Calhoun is the local Cal Surf, where skateboards, surfboards, and snowboards can be repaired, bought, and even sold. This shop is another great local feature that is perfect for those seeking recreation on the nearby trails and lakes. A popular place to eat along the lake is The Tin Fish Restaurant. The Tin Fish Restaurant was started to generate an exciting mixture of delightful seafood with a duty to bring a first-class experience by offering fresh and healthy seafood meals and its famous Fish Tacos to its customers.

Lake Calhoun Park is home to an archery range, wildly popular beach, biking/walking path around the lake, boat docks, a fishing pier, picnic facilities, soccer and softball fields, and sand volleyball courts. During the summer months, Minnesota goes out on the lake to play. With swimming, boating, sailing, fishing, and even logrolling available, Lake Calhoun Park is a wonderful destination for a sunny, summer day. Described as one of Minnesota’s most beautiful lakes, the Lake Calhoun Park is a must-visit destination.

Lake of the Isles Park: A 208-acre park located north of Lake Calhoun, Lake of the Isles Park services the Cedar-Isles-Dean, East Isles, Kenwood, and Lowry Hill neighborhoods. A wildly popular tourist attraction and scenic destination, Lake of the Isles Park is an engineered lake that attracts an average of 5.5 million visitors a year from all over the world. This is largely due to its beautiful waterfront and rich amenities. Connected to Lake Calhoun through a lagoon as well as trails, Lake of the Isles Park offers visitors biking/walking paths, fountains, a soccer field, a fishing pier, and the beautiful lake itself. During the winter, Lakes of the Isles Park also opens a hockey rink and an ice skating area.
