City of Corcoran: Schools & Districts

Corcoran is unique in that it is a part of three different school districts. The districts are Osseo Public School District, Wayzata Public School District, and Rockford Public School District.

Osseo Area Schools, school district 279, is an award-winning school system that inspires and prepares all students with the confidence, courage, and competence to achieve their dreams. Serving all or parts of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Corcoran, Dayton, Maple Grove, Osseo, Plymouth, and Rogers, this district is the fifth largest in the state. It is also is the only Minnesota school district to be named as one of the nation’s “Best Communities for Music Education” every year since 2009. The district enrolls about 20,000 students with 17 elementary schools, four middle schools, three senior highs, an area learning center, two early childhood centers, two special program sites, and an adult education/enrollment center.

An excellent private school option in this district for an integration of faith and learning is St. John’s Lutheran School. The students at this school consistently achieve test scores that are much higher than the average student. The teachers and staff make sure to provide each student with all the tools of success that he or she needs.

As the largest and best high school in the district, Maple Grove High School has established a reputation for holding all students to high standards. The school enrolls 1,700 students and offers over 200 courses that include AP and preparatory classes. Students also consistently score above average in reading and math tests when compared to other schools in the state.

Wayzata schools are located in school district 284, which is one one of the larger school districts in the area, serving over 10,000 students total. The district is known for providing quality education and a large percentage of students that attend college after they graduate. In a recent community survey, 93 percent of parents and community residents rated the quality of education provided by Wayzata Public Schools as excellent or good. Learning and success in academics are placed at the center of what the school district values most. Only one school is actually located within Wayzata’s city limits, while the majority of the others are in the neighboring cities such as Plymouth. The district hosts seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.

The only public high school in the district is Wayzata High School. The high school recieved an A+ rating from k12.Niche.com, and continues provide excellent academic and athletic programs. Newsweek also ranked them in the top 1,000 high schools in the nation in the year 2012. The graduation rate is 99%, and about 90% of graduates plan on post-secondary education. The school offers a wide variety of sports programs. The two most notable sports are baseball and track and field, as they remain top contenders, year after year.

Rockford Area Schools, district 883, is home to three schools. It serves an elementary school, a middle school, and a high school. This district offers smaller class sizes that allow students to get the attention and help they need that is not as readily available in larger districts.

Rockford High School is committed to making their students college and career ready. Teachers make an effort to know all of their students on a personal level. The high school also reaches out to the less motivated students to make sure they feel well prepared for life upon graduation. Students can also receive college credits through Saint Cloud State. The school provides music programs and their choir has won awards at both the regional and state level.
