With a population of 200 residents, Sunny Slope is situated in the Northwest quadrant of the city of Edina. It is bounded on the north and east by the wandering Minnehaha Creek, on the south by 50th St, and on the west by Highway 100. Of its 360 homes, most were built in the 1960’s and 70’s and are in the two-story rambler style.
Of the 73 parcels of land in Sunny Slope, 20 border Minnehaha Creek. The creek makes a sudden turn north after it travels under Highway 100 before coming south again, causing a much longer shoreline around the slope in Sunny Slope. Therefore, there are many more waterfront lots in Sunny Slope. No one really knows why the name for the neighborhood exists. It does indeed have a slope, but that slope descends to the northeast, which means it never actually gets direct sunlight. It would be an actual “sunny slope” if it descended to the south.
Residents of Sunny Slope enjoy the neighborhood’s scenic beauty and quiet, reserved atmosphere. While the neighborhood doesn’t boast much in the way of commercial development, residents prefer it this way. Sunny Slope is close enough to major shopping areas that residents are able to enjoy the best of both worlds.
