Meet One Of My Heros

Tagged: David Olson

Some people don’t believe in heroes, but they haven’t met my dad.  The word ‘Hero’ is defined as a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. I can’t think of a better description for my father who’s hard work, perseverance, and personal sacrifice has directly contributed to the opportunities he has children, that he never had.

Recently I saw this commercial about a father’s love. I have no clue what they’re selling but I’ll take 1,000 of them. The relationship and love of this father is the love that I’ve been privileged to experience from my father. For better or worse, he’s carried me through the important time in life and has made me the man I am today. Every son’s first superhero is their dad, and somehow deep down I still think he’s Superman.

My father gave me one the greatest gifts that anyone could give another person. He believed in me. A powerful illustration of this is from Derek Redmond’s unforgettable 400-meter race at the 1996 Barcelona Olympics games.

A couple years ago my father turned 60 and we had a party with many longtime friends and family. It was great for everyone to reconnect with each other, especially with friends we haven’t seen in years. One of the highlights from the event for me was the video my brothers and sisters helped put together. All five of us kids recorded a short message wishing him a happy birthday and letting him know why we appreciate him. I thought it was worth sharing because I believe he’s a great example of what makes a person a good father. Having five kids without going crazy is impressive in itself, but being a positive influence, a helpful friend, and a great parent is what it means to live a great life. I hope someday my kids can say the same about me.
