Located on the northern side of Dakota County, Sunfish Lake, Minnesota, is a small community that is proud of its legacy. The community treasures its solitude yet understands being a part of the thriving Dakota County. The city is bordered by Highways 110 to the north, 3 to the east, 60th Street West/Peiper Road to the south, and Delaware Avenue to the west. I-494 runs through the city as well.

Sunfish Lake is a small residential community, with a geographical area 1.7 square miles, and a population of around 525. The city is located just 5 miles due south of St. Paul and is only 15 miles southeast of Minneapolis. With the exception of a few churches, the whole city is zoned for single-family residential, resulting in zero commercial district. However, being in the location they are, residents have countless commercial locations just minutes away in neighboring cities.

First established in 1958, the constant goal of city board members has been to maintain a rural environment, with large lot size and little disruption of the natural environment. For new home developments, the minimum lot size is 2.5 acres of land. The majority of the topography in the city is heavily wooded, with many hills and wetlands.
