The Village of Columbia Heights was formed in March 1898 after separating from Fridley township. At this point, Columbia Heights covered 1696 acres and was home to 100 citizens and 20 houses.

The Charter of the City of Columbia Heights was adopted on July 21, 1921 and the city was officially established. In order to honor their history, many of the parks are named after the first council members, including Prestemon, Gauvitte, and McKenna.

Today, the city is thriving with a population of 19,496 residents.
