The City of Oakdale, Minnesota is served by the Independent School District 622, also known as the North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District. High school students in Oakdale are split between two different high schools. Those in the northern half of the city attend North High School in North St. Paul, while those in the southern half attend Tartan High School in Oakdale.

Tartan was established in 1971, and since then, has grown to over 1,700 students. The school has a traditional 6 period, three trimester system, serving students from grades 9-12. Tartan offers students the chance to earn college credits by offering a Post-Secondary Enrollment Option program, College in the Schools program, and Advanced Placement classes. The high school also offers 32 co-curricular activities and 29 interscholastic athletics. Tartan classes have a student to teacher ratio of 20.3, with 83 full-time teachers. In 2015, the Average Standard Score of the school was 78.41. Tartan performed better than 82 percent of high schools in Minnesota in 2015.

Those living in the northern half of the city attend North High School. North High School, home of the Polars, is a college-preparatory school that provides small classes within two different academies. Established in 1905, North High School is known for its outstanding academic achievement and, in 2010, was named by Newsweek as one of the top 1,300 schools in the country. The well-equipped teaching staff at North uses world-renowned international education programs, which helps students to perform above average on the most rigorous assessments. The high school offers numerous higher-level courses, including PSEO and AP courses. Extracurricular activities such as band, choir, debate, and theatre are available to students. Athletic opportunities also exist with sports teams such as basketball, baseball, football, soccer, swim and dive, volleyball, and cross-country.
