The Phillips Community is located south of downtown Minneapolis near the communities of Longfellow, Seward, and Powderhorn. The neighborhood and its local junior high school derive their names from Wendell Phillips, who was a 19th century abolitionist.
Phillips is a distinct area in many ways. Its population of nearly 2,500 residents includes people of many ethnicities and it has a blend of residential, commercial and industrial property. The community is also home to many large employers such as Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Wells Fargo Mortgage, the headquarters of Honeywell, and Allina Health Care Services. Additionally, the Sears building on Chicago Avenue and the Midtown Global Market are located within the Phillips community.
The community was segmented over the past few years into Ventura Village, Phillips West, and Midtown Phillips. The major highways of Interstate 35W, U.S. Highway 12 to the north, and State Highway 55 to the east encompass this community.
