The land that now makes up the city of Lakeland Shores was once owned by a  farmer named William Jones. In 1940, the Jones family began selling off the land fronting the St. Croix River on Lakeland Shores Road. After the Jones family sold the land it was changed from mainly agricultural use to residential use. In 1949, the residents of the area helped incorporate Lakeland Shores as a village to protect their small town lifestyle.

Today the city has remained small, covering a total area 0.73 square miles and has a population of just over 300 residents. The city is home to over 115 households and 80 families. Lakeland Shores has remained completely residential as the city has no industries or shopping centers. Although the city does not have any shopping centers or industries, there are plenty in nearby cities for residents use and enjoy.
