St. Louis Park: Aquila Neighborhood

The Aquila neighborhood is located in the southwest corner of St. Louis Park and lies within Ward 3. Aquila is comprised of 310 acres of land with approximately 23 residential blocks. The neighborhood received its name from the wife of the developer, who named it after a Civil War battle according to Harvey Allen’s book “Action at Aquila”. After Word War II, the quiet neighborhood, along with the rest of St. Louis Park, exploded with baby boomer residents.

Housing in Aquila is characterized as being older and slightly smaller than surrounding neighborhoods. The neighborhood consists of 506 single-family post-war style houses, 55 condominiums, 680 apartments, and 20 duplexes. This close-knit neighborhood is home to nearly 2,800 residents who value Aquila’s authentic, fun, and family oriented community. Even as much of St. Louis Park experiences expansion and renovation, Aquila carries on as an accessible, central, and middle-class neighborhood.

The Aquila neighborhood group, known simply as Aquila Neighborhood, has been creating and organizing community events since 1998. One of the organization’s events is the Annual Summer Picnic in Aquila Park. All residents are invited to enjoy a hamburger and hot dog grill-out along with games for kids. Another event hosted at Aquila Park is the Fall Pumpkin Roll. The main feature of the family-friendly event is a pumpkin roll, chuck, and seed contest. Crafts and food are also provided. Aquila Neighborhoods also organizes garage sales, book reading clubs, clean-ups along trails, and garden tours.

Numerous shopping centers are located within or close to Aquila, including Knollwood Mall. Built in the 1960’s, this small strip mall has a well-rounded assortment of shops, restaurants, and even a Cubs Foods for grocery needs. Authentic local restaurants and entertainment are primarily located in northern Aquila, including Texa-Tonka Lanes. This old-school bowling alley provides a unique bowling experience and classic American food. Burgers, sandwiches, fries, and pizza are local favorites in the friendly bar and grill. Aquila is also home to the authentic Best of India. Unlike many Midwestern Indian cuisines, Best of Indian cuts down on the use of sugars and ghee to provide for full, genuine dishes.
