Bancroft is situated south of Powderhorn Lake, between 38th Street East to the north and 42nd Street East to the south, and amid Chicago Avenue on the west and Cedar Avenue on the southeast. The neighborhood got its name from the Bancroft elementary school, which was named in memory of George Bancroft, an American historian born in 1800. The Bancroft neighborhood consists predominantly of single-family houses constructed before 1940. The neighborhood also contains commercial expansion along Bloomington Avenue and 38th Street.
Bancroft is a small but lively traditional and residential community in South Minneapolis, consisting mainly of single-family homes assembled before 1940 that are owner-occupied, rest among tree-lined streets, and are affordable.
