Neighborhood

Jordan

The Jordan neighborhood, positioned in Minneapolis' northwest, derived its name from a neighborhood junior high school, which was named after Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Emeritus Charles Morison Jordan. The neighborhood is mainly a residential area, but is bordered by businesses ranging from coffee shops to restaurants to services, making room for the interior of the neighborhood to consist of housing. Jordan’s location is excellent and convenient. It is just a short distance from the employment of downtown Minneapolis, and has a residential population of around 8,000.

uThere are many housing types and options to choose from, such as painted lady Victorians and Arts and Crafts bungalows to newer construction. The construction in Jordan differentiates from new Victorians to Foursquare styles. Additionally there are deco Tudors of the 30’s and 40’s, the sturdy brick ramblers of the 50’s.

The Minnesota Internship Center is a public charter high school that targets young people who have not been successful in other schools. They help them focus on their academic, career and other important life goals. Career-building internships and jobs are a big part their mission. Last year, students earned over $800,000 in competitive jobs while they pursued for their diplomas at the same time.

An important organization within the neighborhood is the Jerry Gamble Club. The Jerry Gamble Club is a branch of the Boys and Girls Club of America and provides programming for local youth. Whether it be sports and arts programs, college and career preparation, life skills courses, or leadership initiatives, the Jerry Gamble Club plays an integral role in supporting the local youth. Residents of the Jordan neighborhood have access to the North Regional Library. The North Regional Library is open to the public and belongs to the Hennepin County Library system. A library system that is consistently ranked in the top 10 libraries nationwide, residents have access to all of the books and resources that are a part of this network through an interlibrary loan program.

The Capri Theater is operated by the Plymouth Christian Youth Center. The goal of this theater, located along Broadway Avenue, is to develop the drama skills for youth of the Minneapolis area. The center is a place where youth are taken care of, cherished and tested. At the end of it all, they have to opportunity to perform and showcase their newfound skills.

The Lowry Cafe is a popular breakfast venue for early morning get-togethers. Their attention to detail and outstanding service make them a favorite for the morning meal. If you love breakfast, the café is for you, as their serving portions are larger in size than normal restaurants. This café is an ideal place to visit for newer locals, a fact that any current resident will attest to.

The Jordan neighborhood is home to three parks. They are:

Jordan Park: Jordan park is the largest park within the neighborhood. Attached to the local school, this nearly 4 acre park offers several convenient amenities. Included within the park are baseball and softball fields, a playground, picnic areas with an outdoor grill, and a wading pool. A great park for young families, children especially enjoy the newly renovated playgrounds, and there are plenty of shady areas to take a break from the sun or to share a family picnic.

Glen Gale Park: Glen Gale Park is a small, 1.42 acre park offering a play area for young families. With a playground, horseshoe pits, and drinking fountains, Glen Gale Park makes a great location to spend a couple of hours on a sunny day. The park has numerous picnic tables and benches throughout which offer a break from all of the action. Additionally, the park’s open play field is perfect for throwing a frisbee or exercising the dog.

Cottage Park: Cottage Park is a very small, neighborhood park with a rich history. As one of the oldest parks in the city of Minneapolis, Cottage Park was established in 1883 and holds a special place in the neighborhood’s heart. Despite it’s small size at only half an acre, Cottage Park enchants visitors with its beautiful landscaping, colorful gardens, and interactive playground. Additionally, the park provides numerous seating options for those seeking peace in the outdoors.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

The city of Minneapolis, Minnesota is the largest city within the entire state. As one of the “Twin Cities,” Minneapolis and its neighbor St. Paul constitute the 16th largest metro area in the nation. With over 400,000 residents, Minneapolis is a dynamic and bustling city.

Minneapolis is a very important economic center in the Midwest. Second only to Chicago, Minneapolis offers much of the employment and industry found in the Midwest area. Known for its high concentration of Fortune 500 companies, Minneapolis is recognized as a global city for its impact on the global economy. Major corporations such as Target, U.S. Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial, and Thrivent Financial have established their corporate headquarters within Minneapolis. Additional major employers include Accenture, Allina Health, Fairview Health Services, the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and more.

There are many amenities located in and around the city. With a heavy emphasis on the arts, residents and visitors alike enjoy renowned landmarks such as the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, Weisman Art Museum, the Guthrie Theater, the Orpheum Theater, Orchestra Hall, First Avenue, and more. Additionally, Minneapolis is a premier athletics city, with Target Field, home of the Minnesota Twins baseball team, Target Center, home of the Minnesota Timberwolves basketball team, and U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings football team all being located within the city. Minneapolis also includes fine dining, fabulous infrastructure, and first-class medical care facilities all within the city limits.

The city has a total land area of nearly 59-square miles, of which a little over 5 percent is water. The major route through the city is Interstate 94, which comes from the Brooklyn Park area and connects with Interstate 35W. This leads into the city of Richfield. Interstate 94 continues eastward towards St. Paul. The route that comes in from the west is Interstate 394 from the St. Louis Park area. These Interstates, along with other major highways and transit services, offer convenient travel for the city's commuters, not only into the Downtown area, but the surrounding suburbs and beyond.

Hennepin County

Hennepin County is home to Minneapolis, and contains the largest county population for the state of Minnesota. It is located in the heart of the seven county metro, and is surrounded by Carver, Anoka, Ramsey, Dakota, and Scott County. Hennepin County hosts hundreds of live music concerts, sporting events, 5k fundraisers, and other fun activities.

Hennepin County also is home to the Mall of America, The Country's largest indoor mall. The Mall of America is seen as a tourist destination for hundreds of thousands every year and contains hundreds of stores. The Mall also has a fully functioning indoor amusement park, Nickelodeon Universe and an underwater sea life aquarium for individuals and families to enjoy on a daily basis.

Outside of the hustle and bustle of any major downtown, Hennepin county has dozens of major lakes and lake communities where people can slow down and enjoy the summer months on boats and beaches.
