Situated about 42 miles north of the Twin Cities, the city of Isanti, Minnesota is located in the southern portion of Isanti County. The name Isanti originates from the Santee Dakota Indians and means “knife camp”. Isanti, Minnesota is comprised of 4.85 square miles. In 1910, the population of Isanti was 316. Today, Isanti has grown to 5,629 residents. Within the community, there are about 2,209 households. The main routes that serve Isanti residents are Minnesota State Highway 65 and Isanti County Road 5.
The settlement of Isanti by American Indians dates back to the 1860s. When Isanti was first developed, the location was three miles north of where it lies today. This development is known as “Old Isanti” and today there are no remains left. In 1899, the city of Isanti was moved to its present location in order to be near the railroad.
Today, the city of Isanti is a thriving community, with 161 businesses employing 1,615 people. Within the city, residents enjoy a variety of amenities and activities, including 30 miles of walking and biking trails, a large soccer complex, parks, shopping, and the number 1 nationally ranked BMX track. Isanti is a vibrant, growing community with much to offer for all ages.
