Elk River, Minnesota is located 34 miles northwest of the Twin Cities at the confluence of the Mississippi and Elk Rivers in the southeast part of Sherburne County. The city was named after the herds of Elk that were seen in the area during Zebulon Pike’s expedition of the upper Mississippi River in 1805. The city of Elk River was platted in 1855. The population of Elk River has grown from 635 in 1880 to nearly 23,000 today. Elk RIver covers a total area of 43.82 square miles most of which is land. The city has over 8,000 households and over 6,000 families. The three main route to access the community of Elk River are US HIghways 10 and 169 and State Highway 101.

This riverfront park in downtown offers outstanding views of the Mississippi River as well as an amphitheater, splash fountain, and picnic gazebo.
