Apple Valley, Minnesota, is a city in northwestern Dakota County and a “south of the river” suburb in the Twin Cities. The city got its name from Apple Valley, California, which was where the first home developers in the town had lived. According to the most recent census, the city's population was nearly 50,000, making it the 18th most populated city in Minnesota. In the year 2013, Money Magazine dubbed Apple Valley the 17th best place to live in the entire nation, as it had been in at least the top 30 for six years running. This large bedroom community offers employment options within the city itself, but for those looking for big city options, Minneapolis and St. Paul are less than thirty minutes away.

Apple Valley has a total geographical area of 17.5 square miles, of which 0.7 square miles consists of water. The city's topography is rolling land. Much of the land around Apple Valley is still undeveloped, or contains large quarries.

Apple Valley has a concentrated business district, offering a varied range of goods and services. The city works diligently to provide a lovely and safe community, with convenient shopping and accessible business facilities. Apple Valley has a large park and recreation system. The city itself contains the Dakota County Lebanon Hills Regional Park, the 18-hole Valleywood Golf Course, the Minnesota Zoo, a water park, pool, splash pad, athletic complexes, and other park facilities giving residents many great options of recreational activities and locations throughout all four seasons.
