City of Shakopee: A Brief Overview

Located “South of the River” and on the northern edge of Scott County is Shakopee, Minnesota. Shakopee, with a population of close to 40,000 and a land area of 28 square miles, is the biggest city in the county. This bedroom community was once an isolated area before infrastructure came to the city in the late 1900’s.

U.S. Highway 169 and County Highway 101 are two of the main routes into and out of Shakopee. Highway 169 and nearby State Highway 13 connect the city to the rest of the Twin Cities region. Three major attractions in Shakopee are Valleyfair Amusement Park, horse racing at Canterbury Park, and the Renaissance Festival. These events have put this city on the map, as they combine to draw over two million visitors annually.
