City of Medina: Schools & District 284

Depending on where you live, Medina, Minnesota can be split up into four different school districts. The most common two are the districts in Orono and Wayzata.

Wayzata schools are located in school district 284, which is one one of the larger school districts in the area, serving over 10,000 students total. The district is known for providing quality education and a large percentage of students that attend college after they graduate. In a recent community survey, 93 percent of parents and community residents rated the quality of education provided by Wayzata Public Schools as excellent or good. Learning and success in academics are placed at the center of what the school district values most. Only one school is actually located within Wayzata’s city limits, while the majority of the others are in the neighboring cities such as Plymouth. The district hosts seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.

One of the elementary schools in Wayzata’s school district is Sunset Hill Elementary. Sunset Hill is a school where students learn to be successful academically, physically and socially. Similarly to the district as a whole, the elementary school holds a high value in academic success. The school was ranked in the top 5% of all elementary schools in the state for the Multiple Measurements Rating, and in the top 10% in the metro area. The school’s students also rank in the 92nd percentile in the NWEA when it comes to student growth. This school also has a safe and healthy environment.

The city of Wayzata hosts several private schools, offering an array of different academic options for the local families. One of the private schools is Redeemer Lutheran Church. The school allows families with faith values to allow their children to receive an education that they are comfortable with. The private school has several events during the year that promote its school spirit and community.

The main middle school for local junior high students is Wayzata West Middle School. The only public high school in the district is Wayzata High School. The high school recieved an A+ rating from Niche.com, and continues provide excellent academic and athletic programs. Newsweek also ranked them in the top 1,000 high schools in the nation in the year 2012. The graduation rate is 99%, and about 90% of graduates plan on post-secondary education. The school offers a wide variety of sports programs. The two most notable sports are baseball and track and field, as they remain top contenders year after year.

Orono schools, located in school district 278, are a collection of schools that the locals call, “small in size, but big in achievement”. The schools are of important value to the city and the residents of Orono support them each year. The city of Orono has 5 public schools in its district. These include the Orono Montessori School for early childhood education, an elementary school, an intermediate, a middle, and a high school.

The Orono Montessori School is a local school for early childhood education. The school specializes in providing the nationally-acclaimed methods that Montessori schools around the country use. These methods target a child’s specific critical learning periods.

The high school in Orono offers 26 different athletic programs, as well as other activities such as leadership clubs, and fine arts. Based off of overall athletic programs, the 2015 Niche rankings named Orono in the top ten in the state of MN.
