City of Elko New Market: Community Life

The city of Elko New Market, Minnesota is home to over 4,500 residents. A southern city located almost due south of Minneapolis and a member of Scott County, residents of Elko New Market enjoy a rural way of life and a small-town community. There are numerous local events and businesses that play a role in shaping the community of the city, and Elko New Market’s location also plays a major role.

One of the most popular events that takes place throughout the year are the Family Nights at Wagner Park. Perfect for young families and those who have small children, Family Nights are designed to provide immersive programming while bringing the community together. Some of the activities that take place are free movie screenings, waterslide inflatables, and special appearances from the University of Minnesota Raptor Center.

The Minnesota Twins host another event that residents enjoy. Free Minnesota Twins youth baseball and softball clinics take place within the city at Fredrickson Field. In addition to getting to interact with some of the Twins’ coaching staff, youth ages 6-16 can also learn the fundamentals and skills for America’s pastime. With hitting, fielding, and throwing exercises, kids and parents alike can have a blast. Other popular events include the Minnesota Night to Unite that brings together neighborhoods for crime awareness, the annual Halloween Festival, and the annual Fire Rescue Days. Fire Rescue Days is the largest community event and it truly brings the whole community together. With a 5k, street dance, silent auction, live music, and even a parade, Fire Rescue Days is an event you do not want to miss. Proceeds from the event go to support the local Fire Department.

There are several businesses and organizations that play a role in the Elko New Market community. One of the most popular local restaurants is the Firehouse Grille. With a theme revolving around an appreciation for firefighters and all first responders, the restaurant has booths dedicated to varying branches. While firefighter-themed, it’s the large portions and live music that bring customers back time and time again. Elko New Market is also home to its own amateur baseball team. The New Market Muskies compete in the Dakota-Rice-Scott County league and residents are encouraged to cheer them on throughout the warmer months.

Elko New Market also has a golf course within the city. The Boulder Pointe Golf Course is an 18-hole, par 72 course that offers a challenging gameplay for experienced golfers while still being accessible to those who are less experienced. Open to the public the course also offers a pro shop as well as professional instruction. Perhaps the most famous business within the city, however, is the Elko Speedway. Considered to be the premier racing destination in the midwest, the Elko Speedway is a member of NASCAR and hosts races all throughout the year. A big attraction, many visitors come to Elko New Market to experience the racing. Elko New Market is also home to numerous other businesses and places of worship.

While Elko New Market is by no means a suburban city, it offers an engaging and active community for residents to enjoy. Residents appreciate the open space and peaceful environment that the city provides, but this comes at the expense of amenities. While Elko New Market doesn’t offer as many amenities as some of the larger cities in Minnesota, residents are just a short drive away. For residents desiring greater variety in regards to dining, shopping, entertainment, parks or even employment, the nearby cities of Lakeville, Apple Valley, and Burnsville all deliver. Residents can also enjoy the amenities of the big city. Minneapolis is just 35 minutes north of the city, giving residents the ability to experience the sights and sounds of the city.
