City of Columbia Heights: Schools & ISD 13

The City of Columbia Heights, Minnesota is a part of Independent School District 13, which serves the communities of Columbia Heights, South Fridley, and Hilltop. Columbia Heights Public Schools is a small District, home to about 3,100 K-12 grade students in five schools. Within the District, the core values are community, excellence, collaboration, integrity, respect, courage, and innovation. The College Board selected Columbia Heights Public Schools as the 2016 Advanced Placement Small District of the Year.

Valley View Elementary is one of three elementary schools within District 13. At Valley View staff are committed to developing the whole child- the creative, social, and academic. This elementary school features Responsive Classroom, laptop computers that enable students to use state-of-the-art technology, Literacy Through the Arts, and more. In the classroom, teachers seek to balance high expectations and hard work with warmth and fun. Valley View Elementary believes that the best way for a child to learn is when families, the community, and school staff all work together. All students explore the topics of literacy (reading and writing), math, science, art and music, physical education and health, and social studies.

Columbia Academy serves a diverse student population in grades 6-8. The school offers Pre-Advanced Placement courses in English, science, math, and social studies. Free after school classes are also available through the ENCORE program. Extracurricular opportunities include volleyball, football, basketball, baseball, and softball. The mission statement at Columbia Academy is: The families, staff and students in the Columbia Academy community believe in developing life-long learners, where all have the right to experience success. This is accomplished through an integrated curriculum; which includes interactive communication provided in a safe, respectful, and trusting environment.

Columbia Heights High School (CHHS) offers a small-school atmosphere in a big-town setting. CHHS is dedicated to college career readiness for all 800 students in grades 9-12. Students have to opportunity to take Advanced Placement and AVID courses, which help prepare them for their futures. In addition to academics, CHHS offers many extracurricular activities including theater, speech, jazz band, bowling, robotics, knowledge bowl, science bowl, and many more. Athletic options include tennis, soccer, swimming, football, lacrosse, track, wrestling, gymnastics, dance team, volleyball, baseball, softball, and adapted soccer.
