Oak Park Heights was first platted in 1857 by John Parker, William Dorr, Gold and Mary Curtis, Olive Anderson, and William M. McCluer. Originally, the city of Oak Park Heights was called Oak Park, and it was located within Baytown Township.
Industrial development took root by early settlers because of its proximity to the St. Croix River. A sawmill and barrell making company were established by the river in the 1880s. Today, the warehouse and sawhill still stand, but will be moved in order to build a new bridge.
Highway 36 was built in the 1930s which connected Oak Park to Stillwater. In order to promote automobile tourists, Tara Hideaway was constructed in 1932. Also in the 1930s, a scenic overlook was built on Lookout Trail, which still stands today.
Oak Park was re-platted in in 1938. At this time the name changed to Oak Park Heights. In 1959, the town was incorporated as a city.
The City of Oak Park Heights is very much commercial along Highway 36, offering numerous restaurants and businesses.
Today, the thriving community of Oak Park Heights is home to acres of prairie lands and wooded hills and offers a high quality of life for all residents.
